Scale Model of John Deere

Date: Tuesday, 25 October 2016

Brian Bickmore was eight years old when his mother bought him a Meccano construction set and he hasn't stopped making miniatures since.

The only thing that changed is that they got bigger and bigger as with every Christmas he got a larger set.

Bickmore recently finished his latest project - a 95kg 1/5 scale miniature version of a John Deere 9630 tractor.

"It's a hobby I've always done I suppose,"  he said. "I took to it like duck to a water."

The model has an electric wheelchair motor, batteries and is radio controlled.

"I geared [the motor] down a bit because it was going too quickly."

It took Bickmore about 1000 hours over 12 months to make the miniature by hand.

The only thing he didn't make himself were the eight tyres.

"I just enjoy creating something from nothing. We're all good at something aren't we?"

But this particular project provided itself with some difficulties early on - when the American manufacturer of the tractor didn't want to disclose the measurements of the real deal.

This made it extra difficult for Bickmore to make an accurate miniature model of the John Deere tractor, but he found a way.

He bought a miniature John Deere 9630 tractor from a local store and measured up everything, multiplying it by 3.2 to get the right measurements for his 1/5 scale model.

Bickmore said he had been a mechanic working on trucks in the United Kingdom before moving to New Zealand.

He said he had made miniature bulldozers before but he had never made a model tractor.

"I like a challenge. This particular model I've made, there are none of these in New Zealand."

Bickmore said he had spent about $6000 on making the miniature, which is made mostly of steel.

"You tend not to keep track of these things cause it's a bit frightening."
